Thompson Seizes Joburg Open Clubhouse Lead with Stunning 62
England's Brandon Robinson Thompson delivered a magnificent second-round 62 on Friday, propelling him to 12 under par and securing the clubhouse lead at the Joburg Open, held at Houghton Golf Club.
Amidst persistent rain and lightning delays, Thompson masterfully exploited a temporary break in the weather to establish a strong claim for the coveted Joburg Open trophy.
American Sean Crocker stands as his closest competitor, three shots back at nine under par after posting a 65.
Due to the adverse conditions, the second round was suspended and is scheduled to conclude on Saturday morning.
This delay leaves the door open for several challengers, including South Africans Jayden Schaper and Ruan Korb, both at seven under with their rounds yet to be finished. Compatriots Luke Brown and Louis Albertse also sit at seven under, having already completed their second rounds with scores of 67 and 65, respectively.
Thompson expressed immense satisfaction not just with his exceptional 62, but with the mere fact that play was possible at all on Friday.
“It was incredibly enjoyable,” Thompson remarked. “I was up at 3:45 AM and genuinely doubted we’d play any golf given the forecast. But we managed, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the course.”
A spectacular hole-out for eagle on the par-four 13th hole further heightened his spirits.
Describing the momentous shot, he added, “That’s my first eagle on Tour. It was approximately a 100-yard approach, and the pin placement was ideal. The ball landed beyond the hole and spun right back in. It's an absolutely fantastic feeling to hole out like that.”
Regardless of the remaining play needed to complete the round, Thompson is eagerly anticipating a weekend vying for the championship trophy.
“I’ve found myself in contention before, and I relish the competitive atmosphere,” he stated. “I can assure everyone I’ll have a fantastic time out there.”
