Rory McIlroy Withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational Due to Back Injury
Rory McIlroy has announced his withdrawal from the Arnold Palmer Invitational, citing a lower back injury. The celebrated golfer expressed optimism about his recovery, aiming to be fit to defend his title at The Players Championship next week.
In a statement released by the PGA Tour, McIlroy detailed the onset of his injury: "While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back." He added that the discomfort escalated into "muscle spasms in my lower back" as he began hitting balls on the driving range before his round. "Unfortunately, I’m not able to continue and have to withdraw," he concluded, wishing the tournament a successful finish and expressing his desire to return next year.
His manager, Sean O’Flaherty, provided a brief update, stating, "Nothing more to add. He’ll get treatment over the coming days and will know more then."
Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis reported that McIlroy conveyed his decision to withdraw was a precautionary measure. While he felt he could have continued, the risk of exacerbating the injury was deemed too high, especially with major upcoming tournaments like his Players Championship defense and the Masters next month. McIlroy's plan includes returning home for treatment and rest, with the goal of being ready for The Players.
This incident marks only the second time McIlroy has withdrawn from an event as a professional. His previous withdrawals include the 2009 Nedbank Golf Challenge due to a flu virus and food poisoning, and the 2013 Honda Classic, where he famously walked off the course citing mental struggles, later attributing it to a sore wisdom tooth.
Meanwhile, at Bay Hill, Daniel Berger held a two-stroke lead over Akshay Bhatia, standing at 13-under par through 15 holes of his third round when play was suspended for the day.
