McIlroy Undecided on Pre-Masters Schedule After Back Recovery; DeChambeau and Green Secure Wins
Rory McIlroy, having completed all four rounds at The Players Championship despite recent back issues, remains undecided on whether he will compete in another tournament before his Masters defense. The world number two hinted he's unlikely to participate in the Valero Texas Open, as he has provisional plans to attend the Augusta National Women's Amateur and the Drive, Chip & Putt events that weekend. This could potentially lead him to play the Texas Children's Houston Open for a second consecutive year if he feels the need for more competitive play.
"I'll see," McIlroy stated after finishing tied for 46th with an even-par 71 in his final round. "I haven't really made a decision either way. I'll monitor how my body responds and how I feel during practice sessions at home." He added, "If I get restless at home, I might consider adding an event. However, it felt crucial to make the cut here and get those extra couple of days of play." McIlroy emphasized, "I'll truly assess the situation over the next week, especially once I resume a full practice regimen and gym work, to see how my body reacts. Then, I'll make a call."
At The Players, McIlroy demonstrated strong performance off the tee but struggled significantly with his putting, placing last in the field. He had started the event without a practice round, a consequence of the back twinge that forced his withdrawal from the Arnold Palmer Invitational's third round. Reflecting on his week, McIlroy expressed satisfaction: "Yes, I'm happy. I completed four days, and my body feels good." He continued, "My game progressively improved throughout the week, even if the scores didn't necessarily reflect it. Over the weekend, I struck the ball well but couldn't convert putts on the greens." He concluded, "So, I'm pleased to have played all four rounds and that my body held up. There are a few minor adjustments to make. Overall, it wasn't the week I desired, but I'm focusing on the positives."
Other Golf News: DeChambeau Triumphs in Singapore, Green Wins Australian Open
Fellow Irishman Seamus Power concluded The Players tied for 70th at eight-over par after a final round 76. Like McIlroy, he faced challenges on the greens but found his best form with the driver during Sunday's play. Power is currently an alternate for the upcoming Valspar Championship at Innisbrook.
Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau secured victory at LIV Golf Singapore in a dramatic playoff. He triumphed over wildcard Richard T Lee, who agonizingly lipped out a par putt from two and a half feet on the first extra hole. Both players had finished regulation play at 14-under par following final rounds of 66. Lee Westwood finished two shots back in third with a 69. DeChambeau conveyed his sympathy for his opponent: "I absolutely hated it for Richard. He's been playing unbelievable golf... I have a lot of respect for Richard and how he plays."
The team event at LIV Golf Singapore was claimed by 4Aces GC, comprising Dustin Johnson, Anthony Kim, Thomas Detry, and Thomas Pieters. Among other notable individual performances, Tom McKibbin finished tied for 21st at four-under par with a round of 69, while Graeme McDowell secured a share of 28th place at three-under par after an even 71.
On the Ladies European Tour, Australia's Hannah Green demonstrated composure to win the Women's Australian Open, becoming the first Australian champion since 2014. The seven-time LPGA winner delivered a two-under 70, fending off challenges from compatriot Cassie Porter and France's Agathe Laisne to clinch a narrow one-shot victory.
