Irish Golfers Encounter Difficulties in Australian Women's Open Opener
The initial round of the Australian Women's Open in breezy Adelaide presented a formidable challenge for Ireland's golfing representatives, as Anna Foster, Annabel Wilson, and Aine Donegan each struggled to find their rhythm.
Anna Foster, representing Elm Park, concluded her round at Kooyonga Golf Club with a score of four-over 76, placing her in a tie for 84th. Annabel Wilson recorded a 77, positioning her 98th, while Lahinch star Aine Donegan posted an 80, landing her in 120th place within the 144-player field. All three Irish golfers contended with the stronger winds that were prevalent during the afternoon play.
Meanwhile, Wales' Darcey Harry emerged as the leader after an impressive six-under 66. Germany's Alexandra Fosterling followed closely with a 67, and American Anna Morgan was two shots behind with a 68. A group of players, including last week's Australian Women's Classic winner Kelsey Bennett (Australia), Austria's Emma Spitz, France's Agathe Laisne and Celine Herbine, England's Annabell Fuller, and Italy's Alessandra Fanali, shared fourth place after each carding a 69.
Foster, who missed the cut at the previous week's Women's Classic, reached level par after nine holes, achieving birdies on the 11th and 15th alongside bogeys on the 10th and 14th. However, a triple-bogey eight on the first hole significantly hampered her progress. Despite subsequent birdies on the second and eighth, a double-bogey on the fourth and a bogey on the sixth contributed to her back-nine score of 41.
Making her first start of the season, Wilson maintained an even par through the back nine, securing a birdie on the 11th and a bogey on the 17th. Her front nine, however, saw her drop shots on the first, fourth, sixth, seventh, and ninth holes, leading to her final score of 77.
Donegan's day was similarly demanding, characterized by three birdies, five bogeys, and three double-bogeys, resulting in matching scores of 40 on both nines.
Among other notable competitors, three-time major champion Minjee Lee finished with a level-par 72, tying for 24th. Grace Kim, who secured her first major at last year's Amundi Evian Championship, posted a three-over 75, also navigating the blustery afternoon conditions.
