Five leading golf clubs in County Louth have announced the launch of the inaugural Louth County Close Junior Championship.
Scheduled for August 17-20, the event is considered a pioneering initiative in Ireland, uniting Ardee, County Louth, Dundalk, Greenore, and Seapoint golf clubs for a unique multi-venue tournament.
The championship serves as a vital platform for young talent, with winners in the older divisions earning valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.
Organizers emphasize the event's dual focus on inclusivity and competitiveness.
Spanning 54 holes across five venues, with each club dedicating four-hour tee time blocks, the format maximizes participation for up to 187 competitors while minimizing disruption to club members during the peak summer season.
The competition features four divisions: U19 and U15 Boys, and U20 and U16 Girls.
Opening rounds will take place at Greenore and Dundalk, followed by the second rounds at Ardee and Seapoint.
Following a 36-hole cut, all four divisions will convene at County Louth Golf Club’s renowned Baltray links for the final round.
A spokesperson for the organizing committee highlighted the collaborative spirit underpinning the project.
"This championship is unique in uniting five clubs to maximize opportunities for junior golfers across the county," the spokesperson stated. "Keeping the competition local and affordable helps remove barriers and provides a genuine pathway for juniors into championship golf."
The event also celebrates Louth's rich amateur golf heritage.
The U15 Boys division will be named in honor of Dundalk's Caolan Rafferty, whose recent historic domestic grand slam inspires the county's next generation. He is among several top amateurs, including Walker Cup player Gavin Tiernan, who have emerged from the region's robust junior golf system.
Entries are now open at €30 per competitor, with the championship exclusively for junior members of the five participating clubs.
The initiative is supported by local sponsors Anord Mardix, Greenore Port, Remax Elite, Ping Golf, Links Landscaping, Farrell Furniture, Hanna McDonnell Marketing, Stephen Murphy, and professionals Brian Kerley, David Carroll, Leslie Walker, Scott Kirkpatrick, and Zac Rouiller.
Organizers hope this "one-of-a-kind" pilot event will offer a memorable week for Louth's junior golfers and serve as a model for similar collaborative tournaments nationwide.
