Appleby: A Superb Minimalist Moorland Golf Course
Appleby Golf Club offers a classic moorland experience where the sheep, considering the course their home, actively contribute to the greenkeeping.
The course is nestled in a secluded spot within a breathtaking expansive moorland, providing sweeping panoramic vistas of the Lakeland Fells. A remarkable aspect of Appleby is its seamless integration with nature and its minimalist design, making it almost invisible from the road.
History
Founded in 1894, Appleby Golf Club initially occupied Minsceugh Moor, approximately four miles west of its current site.
Less than a decade later, the club relocated to its present home on Brackenber Moor. The distinctive layout was conceived by Willie Fernie, the 1883 Open Championship winner.
Fernie incorporated only a handful of bunkers into this understated design, which gracefully meanders across the moors. The course has had the honor of hosting the Cumbrian County Championship multiple times.
Soon after its inauguration, the Manchester Guardian lauded the course as "a champion’s course" and "The Sunningdale of the North."
What Makes Appleby Golf Club Unique?
To truly appreciate Appleby, one must embrace the minimalist philosophy adopted by 1883 Open champion Willie Fernie in his design. This layout is deceptively simple, revealing far more complexity than initially apparent when surveying the surrounding moorland.
At first glance, significant hazards at Appleby seem few and far between. However, the open nature of the terrain leaves players exposed to the powerful winds sweeping across Brackenber Moor. On a blustery day, achieving a score close to one's handicap is considered an excellent performance!
And, of course, the sheep are an integral part of the experience. They roam freely across the fairways, much like at Brora in the Scottish Highlands – another course, similar to Appleby, that employs electric fencing around its greens for protection.
Rankings
It holds the 3rd position in Cumbria and ranks 14th in the "England Value" category.
