What is TGL? Schedule, Players, and Rules for the Woods-McIlroy Golf League

Golf News

Two of golf`s biggest stars, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, have joined forces to launch TGL, an innovative, technology-infused golf league designed to deliver a new spectator experience. Partnering with the PGA Tour, TGL features teams of elite golfers competing in highly interactive matches inside a specialized, custom-built arena.

The second TGL season is scheduled to begin on December 28, 2025, with matches continuing through March 2026. Below is a detailed look at the structure, format, and participants of this unique league.

Defining TGL Golf

TGL, founded in August 2022, is a 3-on-3 league featuring six teams, each composed of four PGA Tour professionals. Matches are condensed into two-hour events held at the SoFi Center, TGL’s purpose-built venue located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

What does TGL stand for?

TGL is an acronym for Tomorrow`s Golf League. The name is derived from TMRW Sports, the company co-founded by Woods, McIlroy, and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley, focused on creating technology-driven sports and entertainment ventures.

Match Format and Technology

Each TGL match consists of two distinct sessions:

  • Triples: The first session involves nine holes played in a 3-on-3, alternate-shot format.
  • Singles: The second session features players going head-to-head in six holes of one-on-one competition. Each golfer plays two holes during this session.

The SoFi Center Arena

The course within the SoFi Center is approximately 97 yards by 50 yards (roughly the size of a football field) and is heavily integrated with technology:

  • Players hit from real grass surfaces (tee boxes, fairway, rough, and sand) toward a massive simulation screen over 20 times larger than a standard golf simulator.
  • The technologically advanced green incorporates adjustable jacks that alter the slope and contour, creating varied and realistic playing conditions on every hole.

Rules and Scoring

  • Points: Each hole is worth one point. If teams are tied at the end of regulation play, the match enters overtime.
  • The Hammer: Teams start with three “hammers.” A hammer can be used once per match to increase the value of a hole by 1 point, capping the maximum value of any hole at 3 points.
  • Overtime: Overtime is structured similarly to a soccer penalty shootout. Golfers compete head-to-head until one team successfully hits two shots closer to the pin than its competitor.
  • Shot Clock: A 40-second shot clock is enforced (based on USGA pace-of-play recommendations). Failure to hit the shot within the allotted time results in a one-stroke penalty.
  • Timeouts: Each team receives four timeouts per match (two per session). Unused timeouts do not carry over between sessions.
  • Atmosphere: All participating golfers wear microphones, providing fans with an enhanced, intimate view of the action and commentary.

Regular Season and Playoffs

TGL utilizes a points-based system similar to the NHL. Teams earn points toward the regular-season total, which determines their standing for the SoFi Cup playoffs:

  • Win (Regulation or Overtime): 2 points
  • Loss (Overtime): 1 point
  • Loss (Regulation): 0 points

The top four teams advance to the playoffs, which include a single-elimination semifinal round and a best-of-three championship series.
