McIlroy, a two-time champion, is expected to arrive at the tournament venue today. His preparation will be carefully managed, focusing primarily on range practice rather than extensive course play. His caddie, Harry Diamond, has already been seen scouting TPC Sawgrass. McIlroy aims to make history by becoming only the second player, after golf legend Jack Nicklaus, to win The Players Championship three times.
The Northern Irishman has described his lower back issue as more persistent than initially anticipated but confirmed consistent improvement. His plan includes further treatment in South Florida before traveling to Ponte Vedra Beach tomorrow morning to finalize his preparations.
His later tee-off time on Thursday, scheduled for 1:42 pm local time, provides an advantage, allowing for more recovery and preparation time. McIlroy will be playing in a high-profile group alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Xander Schauffele.
Fellow Irish golfers Séamus Power and Shane Lowry are also set to compete. Power begins his tournament from the 10th hole at 1:28 pm Irish time, grouped with Patton Kizzire and Johnny Keefer.
